About Me
I grew up in Southern California, mostly in
Palm Desert. When I moved to Palm Desert at the age of seven,
it actually was a desert, but it has since developed into a suburban resort town. Everybody in Palm Desert, Palm Springs, etc likens the desert to Orange County, but it's not.
It's hot as hell and there's nothing to do.
So I bolted the desert for
University of Colorado for a year. Apparently I wasn't far enough away, because I transferred to
University of Virginia for the rest of college. UVA, despite
its good ol' boy tendencies, was a great place to be. I went in as a Computer Science major, but learned that even though I enjoy programming, doing it commercially would probably drive me insane. So, I majored in Government. I was also heavily involved in
UDems, the most awesome club on the planet.
After college I joined
Teach For America and taught sixth grade in the
Mississippi Delta. Teaching down there was
at times hilarious,
frightening at others, and sometimes
just plain sad. After teaching, I lived in Washington, DC and worked in education policy. I focused exclusively on
achievement gap related work. I recently started law school at
UC Hastings, which doesn't give me much free time to update my blog.
About The Site
News to Hughes started way back in 2001 as my AIM profile, where I linked weird or funny news stories. People told me that they enjoyed the things I posted, and I wanted to do more than an AIM profile allows. So, I hopped on the trendy blog train and began writing in October 2003. I probably let the sapless joke of a name run too long when I decided to keep the name for my blog, but I guess I'm stuck with it now.
Since 2003 the format hasn't changed much. There really is no rhyme or reason to what I'll write, just stuff I find interesting and / or funny. I try not to make it a soapbox, but
it sometimes happens.
