Emily
Bethards and Ally
Gold helped me flush out some of the questionable connections in the
graph. The updated version is
posted.-----------I
ended up seeing another movie tonight, Love Actually. It was part of a deal
between me and Ally. I would go see this if she went and saw Bad Santa (see
yesterday's post). Anyhow, Instead of giving a review on the movie, I thought I
would just post this graph that I've concocted detailing the relationships
within the movie. This is based on what I remember from the movie. I could be
missing some things. If you have something else to add, email me and I will put it
up.The movie was pretty good, but as
you might imagine, the number of connections to follow within the movie makes
the thing kind of hard to follow. Print out this image and take it with you to
the theaters because it might
help.

4/5 and a close 5th... not bad but god damn a

In California
So
today at 11:00AM PST some body builder turned actor will assume the role of the
world's 5th largest economy. While most of the nation thinks that Gray Davis'
entire governorship was handled poorly, I would like to acknowledge a few of his
many accomplishments. See the bottom for the sad end to his governorship. Most
of this is spliced together from various LA Times
articles.Public
SchoolsThe state will spend $6,887
per pupil this year, almost 20% more than the $5,757 spent in 1998-99. The
National Education Assn. places California 29th in per pupil spending, up from
43rd when Davis took office. California teachers are the highest paid in the
nation. Health
CareNine months after taking
office, Davis signed 21 bills overhauling state regulation of the health-care
industry, reforms considered among the most sweeping in the nation.
The heart of the package was creation
of a Department of Managed Care to oversee health maintenance organizations and
assist patients with questions and complaints, partly with a 24-hour toll-free
help line. Other bills gave patients
the right to sue HMOs, obtain second opinions and appeal coverage denials. Davis
also signed bills requiring HMO coverage of mental illness treatment,
contraception and cancer screening.
Working
FamiliesGray Davis expanded
workers' rights to sue employers, enriched benefits for local government
workers, required that workers receive top union wages on public works projects
and limited privatization of state functions.
Reversing a Wilson administration
policy, Davis also signed a bill requiring that people earning hourly wages
receive overtime after working eight hours in a day, rather than 40 hours in a
week.
EnvironmentDavis
signed the nation's first regulation of the automobile tailpipe emissions blamed
for global warming, and approved fees on computer monitors and television sets
to pay for recycling programs.
EnergyThe
landmark deregulation of electricity under former Gov. Wilson imploded on Davis'
watch. Facing blackouts and soaring
wholesale energy costs in 2000 and 2001, the Davis administration dramatically
altered California's electricity regulatory system.
Twenty-four power plants were built,
adding enough capacity to supply more than 6 million people.
Gay
RightsDavis, a cautious and
moderate politician, took a leadership role on gay-rights issues. It was one
area in which he consistently agreed to bold changes.
The Legislature approved, and Davis
signed into law a wide range of benefits and protections, including a domestic
partner registry. It allows gays to record their relationships with the state.
Gays couples who register will have
the right to make medical decisions and funeral arrangements for each other,
collect on a partner's government benefits and obtain child custody or financial
support after a partnership ends.
And It
Ends...Davis got recalled despite
all of these accomplishments and now has to take on the task of returning to
private life. Here's a cute story about one way he's doing
it:He and his wife, Sharon, recently
paid a visit to California Highway Patrol headquarters, for example. There, each
took a lesson from the experts in a souped-up Ford Crown Victoria, reacquainting
themselves with driving in the real world — something Davis hasn't had to
do since the early 1980s, aides said.
And here is the sad finale to his 5
years serving California:After
witnessing Schwarzenegger's swearing-in today, Davis and his wife will climb
aboard a Southwest Airlines plane, fly home to Los Angeles and begin
contemplating in earnest what went wrong in his 1,778-day reign as
governor. That is going to be the most
heart wrenching flight ever. For all you've had to endure and especially with
this lackluster finish, my hat is off to you, Joseph Graham Davis.

UNIVERSITY
DEMOCRATS DEFEAT COLLEGE REPUBLICANS IN ANNUAL FOOTBALL
GAMENAMELESS FIELD
University Democrats defeated the
College Republicans today in their annual football game, which ended with a
score of 14 - 7. Ryan Hughes, University Democrats Vice President, had the
following to say about today's game:"I
attribute today's win to the enthusiasm within our club this year... and Eddie
McGaffigan's two touch downs."Eddie
McGaffigan was named MVP of the game after having scored two touchdowns. The
quarterback in today's game, Ryan Reyna, was also instrumental for the
University Democrats win.The University
Democrats took back the football title this year after the College Republicans
took it in a 21 - 7 game last year. Two years ago the University Democrats
attained the title with a 21 - 14 win. Speculating on future football games
between the University Democrats and the College Republicans, Hughes offered
this comment:"We had a lot of young
people playing out there today. I can see us holding this title for years to
come."###
